| The new hospital of Mahon was opened in June 2007 after a long awaited renovation of the social services of the island. The Residencia Virgen del Toro, a much loved and majestic building, standing overlooking the Port of Mahon, has served its purpose as the main hospital for over 50 years and will now be renovated for another use. Although sad to leave the old building, the staff are generally very contented to have been moved to one of Europe´s newest hospitals. The new hospital is located on a by-pass behind the town which joins the Sant Lluis road to the airport road and is excellent for ambulance and traffic access. It has a huge carpark and easy public transport by way of buses which stop outside the hospital. The waiting-room facilities for relatives and friends of patients are good and there is a new cafeteria within the building serving light snacks, rolls and beverages. The hospital is quiet and civilized with good information provided. The accident and emergency department has a very short waiting time - perhaps as little as five minutes for " walk-in-off the street "patients. Ambulances take the serious cases straight into theatre. This hospital is totally newly equipped with all the latest technology and well organised. It´s almost good to be ill !!
