In 2001 I employed a 21 year old male clerical worker. He was excellent at his work, always on time, never badly dressed and generally an asset to the firm.
He was, unfortunately afflicted by compulsive gambling sindrome and never had any money after
the first four days of each month. Despite my efforts to assist him, it was obvious that without professional help, he could overcome the gambling  -  mainly slot machines found in every bar in Mahon.
This led to stress and unhappiness and only living with his parents saved him from degradation.
He  never admitted to the problem which would have been the first step to recovery. The last thing I wanted was to dismiss him. which could have resulted in a possible suicide, which happens with so many of that age group when faced with a dead-end often almost insurmountable debts.
At the end of the contract he left for another firm.
The only way to control that situation as an employer is to keep the employee away from handling cash and at the same time attempt to get professional help for that person if they will agree. There is no easy method or medication.
